When Run DMC sang "Mary, Mary, why ya buggin'?" they were prolly talking about a real crazy girl. But when I think of Mary, I think of one chick. A chick that deserves the utmost respect. A chick that has been there with me through first boyfriends, friends with benefits, boyfriends, baby daddy's, chillun's. I love this chick. Let me say it again so you can hear me. I LOVE THIS CHICK. But I gotta aks her a question:

How do you know, Mary, how do you know?

Ok, so check it. I'm in my car with the kids listening to 92Q listening to "Crank dat Solja Boy" for, like, the millionth time that day. Then, out of nowhere comes this song by Mary J. Blige. I'm not gonna lie, the first time I heard it I was just jamming to the beat. But today, I was in my car, listening to 92Q, listening to Solja Boy AGAIN (I mean, like, damn...how many times can they play the damn thing?) and Mary's song came on and this time I happened to catch the words and the most curious thing happened. My body just started moving: my fingers snapped, my hips wiggled, I was filled with joy. Now understand that I do not dance in public much less in my car at a red light where any random Baltimorean can crack on me, but Mary took me there.

How do you know, Mary, how do you know?

She said, "I won't change my life, my life's just fine." Damn! Mary put all our asses on notice that, for real, we waste too much time trying to be what everyone else wants us to be. If it's all good, it's all good.

So for "Real Love", "Be Happy", "7 Days", "Missing You", "You're all I need to get by" and all the other countless songs that came out AT THE EXACT TIME WHEN I NEEDED TO HEAR THEM, I raise my glass to you, Mary. I luhya gurl.
