One step for man, forty steps BACK for women-kind

Ok, so I’m in my car this morning and I am listening to the radio and this song came on that disturbed me so much that even now I am wondering if the song was real or some working of my worst imaginations. Perhaps you’ve heard this little ditty by Monica. It’s called Sideline Ho. If not, here are the lyrics…

Ho,Ho,Sideline Ho, You's a ho, you's a ho, sideline ho

[Verse 1:] When you called his phone, did he pick it up Noooooooooo, cause we was makin love. Did you meet his moms, have you met his kid noo ooh o, did you know my kid was his.

[Chorus:] Get your shit together your makin a fool of yourself yeah, it don't matter if he spends the night his home is somewhere else, Ain't you tired of being on the side line, tired of getting yours after I gets mine, baby second place don't get a prize, when you gonna realize you wasting your time, baby ain't you tired of him gettin in , hittin it real quick then rollin, and ain't you tired of you need a little change and he lie about what he holdin, ain't you tired of spending all the holidays alone, tired of being his little sideline ho

[Verse 2:] Do he take you out, do he foot your bills, noo ooh o, cause I know what his balance is, have you been to his church, do he ask you to pray, noo ooh o, cause Sundays family day

[Chorus] [Bridge 2x's]

Do you got benefits, no, credit cards, no, house keys, no, then you's a sideline ho, do you get pillow talk, no, held at night, no, if you don't make his breakfast you's a sideline ho [Chorus] [Repeat 3x's] You's a ho, you's a ho, sideline ho

See, now, this made me very, very sad. Sad for Monica and sad for the state of women these days. First off, Monica, baby girl…come close…I’m going to speak softly and gently…if the man is that good, that worth fighting over…he wouldn’t be cheating on you. K? ‘Nuff said.

What bothers me the most about this song (besides the sheer number of times the word “ho” is used) is that it just amplifies my beef with infidelity with regards to women. Misplaced anger. Not that you shouldn’t be mad at a woman openly trying to steal your boyfriend. But if you are willing to participate in a relationship where the man is cheating on you and you know about it…I can’t feel anything but pity for a woman like that. Because she is basically sacrificing her morals, her dignity, her respect and for what? Which, in my book, makes the girlfriend and the mistress on level playing field, which begs the question: who really is the ho?
